Emseal RoofJoint
Emseal® RoofJoint® is a patented dual-seal, double-flanged, extruded thermoplastic rubber system for sealing structural, wide and high movement capability, expansion joints in roofs, including green and vegetative roofs, as well as in plaza and other deck assemblies. Watertightness is achieved through positive (welded and/or bonded) integration with the roofing membrane and a purpose-designed, secure waterproof sealing system for transitioning between the difficult to seal, joints in the roof and the vertical joints in the building façade / walls.
The waterproofing element of most other roof expansion joints is a looped membrane, where the loop hangs down into the joint, or is lifted by means of a foam backing. Either way, these looped ‘bellows’ membrane joints do not work well at the transitions from the roof joints to the wall joints, plus they are always limited and at risk of damage and leaks, due to having only the single layer of membrane in the joint to provide the watertight seal.
Also, unique to Emseal RoofJoint is the double-level connecting flanges, which allow multi-layered sealing and watertight integration with the roof waterproofing membrane. The lower flange is welded or adhered to the roof membrane along the sides of the roof expansion joint opening, and this is mechanically locked to the roof decking or blocking by the product’s termination bars and anchors through this flange. The upper flange is then welded or adhered to counter-flash over the termination bars and underlying membrane joints, thereby further ensuring that all the penetrations are completely sealed and watertight.
Expansion and contraction of the joint is accommodated by the folding design of the Emseal RoofJoint central gland. This double-cell configuration also provides two levels of sealing to ensure watertightness for the long-term, whilst the geometric shape is purpose-designed to develop minimal stress and strain during movement, which also helps ensure durability and longevity.

In addition to sealing the movement and expansion joints in single-ply and other flat roof applications, Emseal RoofJoint can also be used very effectively for softscape (planted) plazas, green roofs / garden roofs, and blue (pool) roofs. Emseal RoofJoint can be used in split-slab and hardscaped roofs and plaza decks, for example when drainage or other connections or details and services may be impeded by a traditional expansion joint protruding above the structural deck elevation. In these cases, an additional expansion joint seal would be needed in the substructure and through the wearing course. (Please refer to Emseal SJS, System. Emshield DSM and DSM-DS, depending on traffic and exposure etc.) As with roof joint sealing applications, where the roof joint is also required to have a fire-rated seal (e.g. CE Certified etc.), then Emshield DFR System can be installed directly below the Emseal RoofJoint.
Most importantly, wherever Emseal RoofJoint is used, you can also transition securely and easily from the roof joint sealing to the walls, and secure wall joint sealing, using the unique Emseal RoofJoint Closures. These will securely marry and connect the Emseal RoofJoint system on the roof, with a continuous seal to the Emseal Seismic Colorseal system in the vertical wall expansion joints.
Emseal RoofJoint is available in TPV (reflective white) and NPVC (reflective white or black), Emseal RoofJoint is compatible with most roofing membranes, features two levels of joint sealing, two levels of membrane integration, and two methods of fastening (bonded and mechanical).

Emseal RoofJoint Material Composition:
Emseal RoofJoint is available in two formulations:
- NVPC-based: Nitrile-Rubber-Plasticized NPVC blended alloy.
- TPV-based: Thermoplastic Vulcanizate.
NPVC-based Emseal RoofJoint is used for:
– direct welding to PVC-based roof membranes;
– adhesion into hot or cold-applied rubberized asphalt systems;
– adhesion to thermoset-rubber roof membranes (EPDM, Neoprene, etc.)
– adhesion to SBS membranes
– adhesion into torch-applied mod-bit membranes
This is extruded from a Plasticized NPVC blend, which was chosen for its broad range of compatibility with most roof waterproofing membrane systems. It can be heat-welded to PVC roofs, and subject to the recommended procedures of the specific roofing membrane manufacture, in respect of preparation, cleaning, priming, etc., this version also adheres well to the accessories of all the usual adhered sheet membrane accessories, asphaltic (hot and cold applied) membranes, and SBS modified membrane waterproofing systems.
TPV-based Emseal RoofJoint is used for:
- Direct integration through heat welding to TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) based roof membranes and accessories etc.
Fastening accessories: All Emseal RoofJoint profiles are all supplied with the necessary termination bars and fasteners required for installation.

Watertight Expansion Joint and Transitions:
Installation Overview Roof-to-Walls:
Emshield RoofJoint - Continuity of Seal:
As with all Emseal expansion joint systems, continuity of seal is extended to crosses, tees, upturns, downturns, roof-to-wall, and other compound conditions typically found in roof and deck construction projects. Factory-fabricated transition pieces can be welded to straight lengths in our plant when the necessary field measurements are provided, and these can be butt-welded on site to straight lengths using simple heat-welding equipment, with training available from Emseal. Note: All factory produced welds are strengthened with reinforcing strips and leak-checked before shipment.
Emseal RoofJoint Closures – For Sealing Roof-Wall Interfaces
Solid-Wall Closures:
This factory-fabricated transition piece is manufactured from Emseal Seismic Colorseal wall-expansion joint material from Emseal. This single unit piece has factory-coated silicone bellows on the top and upper-back faces for integration with Emseal Seismic Colorseal in the wall and Horizontal Emseal Colorseal as a secondary seal and insulator across the roof.
The silicone-coated top side of the closure is shaped to match the underside of the Emseal RoofJoint extrusion. The Emseal RoofJoint Solid-Wall Closure is installed before installing the Emseal RoofJoint. It is installed ¾” down from the roof deck or wood blocking surface. A sealant band of silicone is applied across the upper mating surface of the closure. The Emseal RoofJoint is then installed. The underside of the Emseal RoofJoint will mate with the top of the already installed closure.
Cavity-Wall Closures:
Like the solid-wall closure, the Emseal RoofJoint Cavity-Wall Closure, is a factory-fabricated transition piece made from Emseal Seismic Colorseal. The difference is an extended, horizontal setback portion of coated foam to bridge the cavity from facade to structural backup wall. The sides of the “bridge” are additionally coated with silicone to seal them against moisture in the cavity and to constrain the lateral expansion of the foam into the cavity.
The underside of the Emseal RoofJoint marries to the top of the appropriate Emseal RoofJoint Closure. The Emseal Seismic Colorseal in the wall joint is joined to the Emseal RoofJoint Cavity-Wall Closure. This creates a watertight continuity of seal from the structure’s vertical plane (wall) through the horizontal plane (roof).
Green / Vegetative Roofs
Emseal RoofJoint is ideally suited for use in sealing the structural slabs beneath green, vegetative roof assemblies. Because the growing medium is loose, compressible and granular, movement that occurs at the structural slab can be absorbed without detrimental effect in the green roof overburden. The groove in the extrusion act as a reservoir for excess growing medium moisture while not prohibiting drainage across the joint when needed.
Plazas and Split-Slab and Hardscaped Decks
Emseal RoofJoint is also an excellent option for split-slab and hardscaped decks when drainage or other construction may be impeded by the expansion joint protruding above the structural deck elevation. In these cases, an additional expansion joint seal would also be needed at the wearing course. (e.g. Emseal SJS, Emshield DSM / DSM-DS).
When the roof / plaza deck expansion joint requires a fire rating, Emshield DFR can easily be installed directly below the Emseal RoofJoint for a single source solution.
For split-slab, podium and other hardscaped decks without drainage or other imitations, see the FP (For Plaza) series of expansion joints from Emseal: Emshield DSM-FP Series, Emseal SJS-FP series or Emseal SJS-FP-FR Fire Rated Series, which can all meet these requirements in a single product and one installation.
Movement Joint Insulation
Insulation in the joint opening beneath a roof expansion joint is usually critical in maintaining the energy efficiency of the structure. Insulation under Emseal RoofJoint can be achieved in two ways:
Method 1: Use Emseal Horizontal Colorseal beneath the Emseal RoofJoint.
The advantage of this solution is that in addition to insulating the roof joint, the Emseal Horizontal Colorseal provides an additional watertight barrier beneath Emseal RoofJoint and it also ties-in to the Emseal RoofJoint Wall Closure transition piece , which further ensures continuity of seal and insulation with the roof and wall joints. The R-Value of Emseal Horizontal Colorseal is 2.15 per inch of depth. Therefore in a 4-inch joint, Horizontal Colorseal has a depth of 4.5 inches and an R-Value of 9.675. To increase the R-Value of any size of Horizontal Colorseal, specify an increased custom depth.
Method 2: Batt Insulation and Looped Membrane (by Others)
By installing a loop of standard roofing membrane material (by others) to support fiberglass or mineral wool insulation batts before installing EMSEAL’s RoofJoint. While commonly used on site, this solution provides no continuity of R-value with the wall expansion joint and is subject to insulation value loss through moisture retention due to condensation accumulation in the batt insulation as well as through compression during joint cycling.
